A case study through the structured group therapy with reading activities-Focused on the self-esteem of the children who experienced parent divorce-

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to improve the self-esteem of children from the divorced families through the structured group therapy with reading activities. The children of divorce generally have poor self-esteem, and they can¡¯t efficiently cope with many negative emotional problems in their home, school, and social context. Thus the present study was designed to help the children be relaxed and express their feelings comfortably in the context of group situation through the structured group therapy because it could provide them acceptable and supportive surroundings. Especially, the present study focused on emotional relaxation, self-awareness, problem solving and frustration overcoming using reading activities. 6 subjects were referred to participate in this study by social worker, and they were randomly assigned to treatment group or control group of three. The experimental design of this study was pre-post design and the treatment program was consisted of 18 sessions (about 90 minutes per each session). Each session consisted of 4 parts of activities, that is, simple relaxation (15 minutes), reading (30¢¦40 minutes), discussing (15 minutes), and free play (20¢¦30 minutes). The significant results were as follows: (1) As predicted, the negative style of communication and/or behaviors were decreased gradually and appropriate communication and/or behaviors were increased as the sessions were going on. (2) They also showed improved self-esteem compared to pre-treatment phase.
